Two Tuesday Quotes: de Kooning and Rauschenberg

This week’s quotes are dedicated to my good friend Chris Gandy. A great benefit in surrounding one’s self with educated companions is that they often feed you when you are hungry. Chris’ love for philosophy, literature and art presents a gold mine of historical figures who otherwise would have been unknown. Inspiration to research these two artists came from this NPR piece: Two Ways to Think About Nothing.

The attitude that nature is chaotic and that the artist puts order into it is a very absurd point of view, I think. All that we can hope for is to put some order into ourselves.
– Willem de Kooning

The artist’s job is to be a witness to his time in history.
– Robert Rauschenberg

Two Tuesday Quotes a Day Late: McCloskey and McCarthy

This weekly quote post goes out to my friend Karen Ivy (follow her blog here). In her attempt to recall the last, and only, Republican presidential candidate she ever voted for I was inspired to help her find the name which exposed to some historical figures which escaped my educational tract. An additional thanks to Steve Bumgarner for his Facebook post that started it all.

The result was, when Congress convened in January 1971, everyone was now an environmentalist. They had seen a new force, college students, who favored the environment.
– Pete McCloskey

Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it’s important.
– Eugene McCarthy

Who are these people?

Two Tuesday Quotes, Plus Two: Burroughs, Dukakis, Feinstein and Barnes

In memory of the teens shot at Ohio’s Chardon High School.

Opinions vary regarding the degree of gun control needed to ensure a free and safe society so here are four quotes which address the concern. Feinstein’s begs the question of whether we have a fundamental right to “feel safe” and whether not having guns affords that right. In my opinion her quote cannot be supported through constitutional or other logical means. Regardless, the debate will continue.

After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn’t do it. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to live in a society where the only people allowed guns are the police and the military.
– William S. Burroughs

I do not believe in people owning guns. Guns should be owned only by the police and military. I am going to do everything I can to disarm this state.
– Michael Dukakis

Banning guns addresses a fundamental right of all Americans to feel safe.
– Dianne Feinstein

Should we have background checks, waiting periods? To drive a car you have to pass a test that shows you know how to drive your car safely, you should have to do the same thing with guns.
– Michael D. Barnes
