Getting By With A Little Help From My Friends

One of the difficult things about being a cynic are those moments of beauty which, like a religious experience, cannot be explained away. The moment washes over you and even upon reflection the desire to redefine it is absent of any appeal. When this happens the cynic can only smile and appreciate the hope which on other days would escape him. How can the mirror serve as a companion after this? Has it not become a judge which silently interrogates him at every glance? The poor cynic must forget, falling back on the comfort of his doubt and turn his gaze from every reflection.

And still his friends stand their guard.

This is a small celebration of their solidarity. This is a thank you. From the hallowed walls of Facebook, my timeline reads these. Some are direct or funny while others have a history or underlying meaning which requires explanation.  For example, when you read Chris Gandy’s it must be within the context of a fellow cynic returning the cursed blessings of the abyss we call Facebook. That he returned and “friended” me was a comical sigh of relief. Wade Baugher’s is one which has a nice depth to it.

Don’t get me started on the great pictures!

Can Check

With everything else that has been going on (and that includes my recent bent on social commentary) now is a good time to remember what started this blog: A soup can. More than one person has told me that in today’s age of debit cards money is less physical and more virtual. Because of that, change is not something they come by very often. I have tried to make behavioral changes so that cash is used in lieu of plastic. An added benefit is that the companies I frequent do not have to pay usage fees.

Presently my can count is 2 1/2. Two soup cans and one evaporated milk can. The latter thanks to the baking of my seasonal pumpkin pie. As you can see in the photo, the cans are under observation for safe keeping.

Gleaning: Saturday the 10th of December

I received this email from Sandi Newman, area coordinator for Society of St. Andrews:

The Gleaning on Saturday is at Grove House, 2940 Claire Lane. This is a private home for developmentally challenged individuals and looks like a residential home. There is a circular drive in front of the house but we cannot park there. The best place to park is along the road across the street from the home, on Clairboro Rd. E. then walk across Claire Lane to the home. There is a path that leads along the left side of the house to the backyard and the grove of trees. Your son’s friends would be welcome to come. Citrus sometimes has spines on the branches so I recommend wearing garden gloves for protection. If you have any hand clippers or limb loppers, long-handled pruning tools, it would be helpful to bring them.
If you can bring boxes, preferably banana boxes or other strong structural boxes, that would also be helpful. Otherwise we pack in plastic grocery bags. I would also suggest bringing bottled water.
We will meet at 8:30 and usually work about 4 hours but you can leave any time you need to.

The weather in NE Florida will be crisp, perfect for a morning in the grove. So far I have no takers but the seeds have been planted (no pun intended) for future endeavors.
