Creating Waves

This is how it all begins…I’ve been remiss in posting to Change-Can for some time, busy with the new semester, etc., but excuses are no excuse.

I’m in the process of starting a food drive on campus, and is frequently the case when working with other organizations on campus, the ship of bureaucracy is slow to turn…but we will get there.  Consider starting a food drive in your place of employment. One plastic bin will go a long ways in helping those who do not have enough to eat. For those of us like myself with a bit too much around the middle, it is particularly obscene that while some do not have enough to eat, my waistline is evidence of my excess and affluence.

I’m also working on putting together a veterans group on campus for our student veterans, of which we have many…young men and women who have put themselves in harm’s way. And while I frequently do not share their political beliefs, my ideology takes a back seat to being of service to those who have served. Think about what you can do to help our veterans, many of whom wind up at the local food pantry or on the streets due to personal, societal and governmental issues. While our government frequently fails those in need, veterans most egregiously, we need not do so. There are many organizations in desperate need of volunteers and support, and most are merely a mouse-click away.

Finally, for the past several years I have been paying $40 per month to the local YMCA to sustain a membership that I fail to use for several reasons….(1) I am terribly lazy (2) I have all the equipment I need at home to maintain myself physically (3) The reasons are unimportant. So I’ve decided that rather than waste $40 per month, I could put that money to good use by funding a small scholarship on my campus. It’s not much in the grand scheme of things and will not even cover the entire cost for one student to attend one semester’s worth of classes, but it might help defray the cost of tuition and/or books for some person who in turn, will go on to inspire and facilitate change. You might consider doing so as well. If you appreciate the education you received and/or the efforts of a particular instructor, and remember what it was like to be a poor college student, think about funding a small grant/scholarship at your local campus or alma mater.

These are small steps, and there is much work to be done. Think about what you can do today to help. No effort is too small, no idea is too insignificant. One good thing is one good thing, and the world does not contain enough good things. Enjoy the weekend and fight the good fight. – Chris

Gleaning the Farms and Other Items

For anyone who is interested, I have contacted SoSA (Society of St. Andrews) to volunteer time in the farms of Florida, gleaning food for the hungry. This is a group that works in a good number of other states (here). If you are at all interested in spending time to help let me know. When they contact me with availability I will share it on the site.

With South Carolina being another state to glean in I will probably be requesting times there as well.

A few other projects being worked on are below. As you can read, Chris is very busy.

  • I have sent out an email to some friends I think can offer their services or direct me to ones who can for a chili cookofff I would like to host in December. Proceeds would go towards the Second Harvest of North Florida and the West Chatham Food Pantry. My plan is to ask for a $5 donation and 5 cans of food. The food collected will go directly to Second Harvest. My first order of business is to get some chefs. Let me know if you can help.
  • I am trying to frame a Pop Warner Scholarship Fund so we can help pay for at least one child to play Pop Warner Football. Listening to Fred Taylor’s retirement speech today, where he spoke of his grandmother scraping together $60 for him to play, has further inspired me that this will be a worthy effort.
  • Chris is working to coordinate a food drive at Wake Technical Community College with other like-minded campus groups.
  • Chris is working to coordinate an event for Veterans Day. This could include acquiring a flag that has been flown over the state capital and presenting it to the oldest living veteran in North Carolina.
  • Chris is working to set up a $500 scholarship fund on Wake’s campus.

The $1 Facebook Friend Fund never got off the ground and with Chris now off Facebook I am carrying the standard. I know the one-click donation link will help (or I hope it will) and it has not been forgotten. Also, please don’t forget to keep those BoxTops. Remember, I will come and get them.

One Can Down

One can filled: new can in progress. I have a photo of Chris’ 3 cans that I will share soon. Matt Lemine told me he filled one before he left to FSU and I know another friend is working his in secret (though I believe he is using mason jars). Thanks to everyone who is redefining the can or simply expanding its function.

Some reminders for you:

1. Would love any stories so I can pen them, or rather type them up for the site.
2. Volunteer activity or donation opportunities…let us have them.
3. Boxtops for education: I will come and get them. Don’t throw them away.
4. Fitness opportunities are coming up. Keep your schedule open for the Be Her Freedom Run.
5. Help someone grow something.
6. Have a favorite outdoor activity or place to get away (trail, water, hill, business, etc) let us know.

Don’t assume someone else is getting it done. We don’t have to be original, just an effective part of the collective.
