“Who then is invincible? The one who cannot be upset by anything outside their reasoned choice.” – Epictetus, Discourses, 1.18.21
Today’s meditation focused on the example of a person being interviewed by the media, and how they handle any and every question with “humor, poise and patience.” The first person that comes to my mind is Peyton Manning. I cannot remember an interview where he did not leverage the three aforementioned qualities, especially after his Denver Broncos devastating Super Bowl 48 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Flip the script and consider how Cam Newton dealt with his loss to Manning’s Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. He was sullen and distant, receiving a significant amount of criticism for what was perceived as a lack of professionalism and maturity.
What type of personality do you want to be around? Someone who allows the emotions of the situation to beat them down, or the one who feels, reflects and then acts in a reasoned manner? Let me leave you with this comedic example of what happens when you’re not practicing invincibility in the face of the media.
